Hinkley Point C

At any one time, 9,000 people are working on the Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station megaproject.

This figure includes colleagues from Wincanton as, in June 2018, it was selected by EDF Energy to join forces with NNB Generation Company, the subsidiary responsible for building/ operating HPC, as the project’s official warehouse and transport service partner.

Every construction job comes with risk, but HPC’s workforce size and number of contractors made collaborative working more vital than ever to ensure site safety and security, protect staff health and wellbeing, and avoid disruption to build schedules.

As a Tier-1 contractor on the project, Wincanton’s project management team knew generating and embedding a people-orientated culture where individual colleagues were risk-aware would be key to collaborative working on this scale.

The team devised and delivered a series of education, awareness, and engagement initiatives based around the themes of health and safety, security, and employee and community wellbeing.

These engaged, encouraged, and empowered the Wincanton NNB team to take responsibility as individuals to protect and benefit their colleagues, the supply chain, their environment, and ultimately the build.

The result? A Wincanton HPC operation that realised that, together, it was greater than the sum of its parts.
