Crown Agents and UNICEF have been working together with Ministries of Health to support countries in planning sustainable and context-specific solutions for improving healthcare waste management.

To date, the project has been implemented in five countries and has provided additional technical assistance to the regional office in East Asia, supporting 13 countries in that region.

The open burning of waste is seen as a major source of air pollution, (more than the whole aviation industry, globally), leading to increased methane emissions in our atmosphere.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a large increase in creation of medical waste across the world, compounding the problem for low- and middle-income countries.

The innovative solutions in this project have helped countries improve their healthcare waste management approach and in doing so cut greenhouse emissions, created economic growth, and achieved greater employment opportunities in the industry.
