Transforming urban mobility & placemaking: delivering the Camden Transport Strategy
The London Borough of Camden - working closely with colleagues across the council, community, and business partners in the Borough – developed and delivered an unprecedented range of schemes in delivering the Camden Transport Strategy 3 year plan for 2022-2025.
This includes completion of the transformational, £40m West End Project (including rejuvenating Tottenham Court Road with high quality public realm and making it bus and cycle only, segregated cycle lanes on Gower Street and creation of several, award-winning new public spaces), trebling in length of segregated cycleways across the Borough and the rapid expansion of “Safe & Healthy Streets” traffic restriction and area improvement measures in multiple locations.
Highly ambitious parking, shared transport and wider initiatives have delivered demonstrable mode shift in Camden – cycle mode share has more than doubling from just over 3.5% to nearly 7%, and walking now accounts for almost half of all resident trips.
The Service has excelled in the domains of teamwork, inclusion, and progressive thinking, working closely with partners across our communities.
The climate crisis and improving air quality are baked into our work; road transport CO2 emissions have been cut by 15% and NOx emissions have been cut in half since 2013.
