Award Name: The Sustainable Materials Award

Company: Maersk Logistics & Services UK&I

In summer 2023, Maersk launched its glulam warehouse in Dublin, Ireland, as part of its European storage network expansion.

The warehouse is constructed to net-zero specifications with a glue-laminated (‘glulam’) timber structure.

The project stands as an example of sustainable architecture, showcasing a commitment to environmental consciousness and the use of innovative materials.

Decarbonisation is high on Maersk’s agenda and critical to the success of its integrated logistics strategy around the world.

As such, the company is on course to achieve its commitment to deliver net zero emissions across all operations by 2040.

Maersk’s wider decarbonisation initiatives already include green methanol-powered container vessels and fully electric HGVs.

So, when the opportunity arose to build new warehousing in Dublin, Maersk was keen to explore the use of glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction, with a brief to achieve not only net-zero carbon in use but also net-zero embodied carbon.

Ireland’s first glulam timber-framed industrial building is certified LEED 'Gold' and BREEAM 'Excellent' and has an A3 Building Energy Rating (BER).
