Medway Council is focused on building a better-connected transport network, ensuring reliability and safety for everyone. To reach this ambition, in 2023, the Council launched the Safer, Healthier Streets Program, an area-wide investment program that aims to: -improve road safety -reduce congestion and impacts of idling traffic -improve connectivity making journeys safer and more reliable -help improve air quality outside of school gates -encourage people to use more sustainable transport options. Safer, Healthier Streets is a pioneering program helping to meet the Council’s objectives in the key policies, including Council Strategy 2023 to 2024. With a strong focus on technology and community engagement to support behavioral changes, the program was designed to deliver several initiatives to achieve large-scale impact simultaneously. A newly established team that combined parking, climate, engagement, and sustainable transport specialists worked to implement three key workstreams.

Within a fiscal year the program was delivered, from inception to implementation: -five strategic red routes -seven school streets -moving traffic enforcement at eight locations. Through widescale investment into its networks, the Council has been able to service this regional community with its range of demands in new and innovative ways.

All to help keep Medway moving.
