All Change at Bank

Year: 2024

Award: CiTTi Awards

Award Name: The Transport Planning Award

Company: City of London Corporation

Once seen as a bustling vehicular route through the City of London, Bank Junction has become a space which is more inclusive and welcoming.

The All Change at Bank project represents a bold move from vehicular dominance to pedestrian priority with narrower carriageways, wider pavements, and increased areas of public space above the busy Bank Underground station.

As part of the improvements, the City of London Corporation has introduced a reinvigorated public realm scheme, improving the experience for people walking and wheeling by closing two of the previous 7 arms into the junction to motor vehicles.

The rebalancing of space between vehicles and people has made the area more inclusive, providing space for people to walk and wheel at their own pace with enhanced formal and informal crossing points, seating, and some greening.

Project objectives were to reduce casualties, reduce pedestrian crowding levels, improve air quality, and improve the perception of ‘place’ – as a place to spend time in rather than to pass through.

Completed in July 2024, the project is contributing to the regeneration of one of the City’s busiest areas, establishing a renewed identity for the Bank area.
