Transport Equality and Education in Action: Engagement in the Regent’s Park Estate
To inform transport and public realm proposals brought forward through the Regent’s Park Area Safe and Healthy Streets scheme, the London Borough of Camden, in partnership with Sustrans and Fitzrovia Youth in Action, carried out engagement and co-design with the Regents Park community.
A key focus of this was engaging with under-represented groups, including disabled people and children/ teenagers. As part of this, Camden, Sustrans and Fitzrovia Youth in Action developed the Young Urban Designers Program.
This program was designed to achieve two key goals: 1) To co-design solutions to transport and public realm issues in the Regent’s Park Area with local young people and 2) to increase Camden’s capacity and understanding of engaging with young people on built environment issues.
In running this program the following has been achieved: 1)Young people in the Regent’s Park Area shared their views on transport and public realm improvements; 2)Young People advised the Council on key steps they can take to better engage with young people; 3)Young people in the Regent’s Park Area gained experience of transport planning and civil engineering; and 4)Council officers had an opportunity to continue learning and improving their engagement skills.
