Cellular Origins

Year: 2024

Award: Robotics & Automation Awards

Award Name: The Best Use of Robotics or Automation in Healthcare Award

Company: Gene Therapy Catapult, Cellular Origins, Zyme Communications, Stäubli Robotics

The potential of cell and gene therapies to revolutionize the way we look at disease treatment cannot be understated, offering a route to treat even the most debilitating of conditions.

Despite this, insufficient expertise and manufacturing capability has created a significant divide between innovative therapies and the manufacturing capacity we have to make them, ultimately leaving many patients without hope of a cure. Cellular Origins, spun-out of TTP in 2023, was created to address this issue.

The Company’s robotic platform, Constellation, leverages the power of Stäubli’s fully autonomous robotic arms, combined with proprietary tube welding technology, to deliver a unique solution for sterile, end-to-end manufacture that is efficient in space, cost, and labor.

The system is fully modular, meaning it can be adopted at any stage of production, and built around the needs of an individual therapy. Now working in partnership with the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, the Companies are exploring the benefits of automation in real-world applications, alongside developing novel strategies to integrate existing bioprocessing equipment into the platform without necessitating process redevelopment.

Together, they are helping to bring about a future where life-saving therapies are not limited by manufacturing capacity, and are available to all patients across the globe.
