Year:

Award: Supply Chain Excellence Awards - UK

Award Name: The Workforce Planning Award

Company: Barnes Logistics

Barnes is one of the UK’s leading providers of logistical support and warehousing for time-critical businesses.

Headquartered in the North West, the logistics firm operates from seven sites across the country, supporting a nationwide client base.

The team is made up of experienced transport professionals and fully trained and qualified drivers who’ve helped Barnes to achieve ‘Just-in-Time’ supplier status.

It’s no secret that the shortage of drivers has hugely affected logistics firms across the UK over the last few years and Barnes has been no stranger to the adverse impact of labour shortages.

However, the logistics firm was proactive in seeking solutions to this problem and undertook extensive market and employee-based research to understand how it could improve its capacity to recruit and retain talent.

This project was led by Barnes’ Chief People Officer and involved the adoption of a model for continuous improvement to outline areas for intervention.

As part of the project, a data and evidence-based approach was taken.

This saw extensive analysis of exit interviews with departing drivers conducted to improve the operational environment, while the recruitment strategy was also enhanced to develop the company’s capacity to attract talented drivers.
